- Beautiful Vintage Embroidered Kantha Quilt West Bengal, India, Lovely Cotton Embroidery on Cotton Ground.

- This unique example was made from recycling discarded family garments such as women's sari's and men's dhoti, the traditional clothing of the area. Being poor village people, everything was saved, and nothing went to waste. Then the items were re-fashioned into such things as blankets, seating mats, quilts, bags and various temple offerings. What you see here is such a piece. All the threads were unraveled and base materials were once something entirely different, all garments once used within the family. It is a wonderful way to keep their ancestors close, and create a beautiful object from discarded material. This charming example was likely used as a young child's quilt. Also to be noted, is the inscription, which is likely a blessing for the child. The softness of the handle, the color pallette and workmanship are absolutely wonderful! All dyes appear to be from organic sources, such as various plants and minerals. Please note, this example does have an old patch in the very center, so please view images closely.
